Many of us will ask, “I eat a healthy diet how could I possibly be deficient?” The truth is, even though Vitamin D can be found in some foods such as fish and fortified milk, the majority is produced when our skin is exposed to sunlight, especially UVB rays. Believe it or not, only 15 minutes of full sun-exposed skin is needed to maintain vitamin D levels. That being said, as Canadians ourselves, we know this is almost impossible during the winter months! In fact, this low sun exposure is why the government fortifies products with vitamin D such as cow’s milk. How do I know if I may be deficient?
